BNP to stage ‘black-flag’ procession Saturday

Senior Correspondent: As Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) did not give permission to hold a rally in the capital for tomorrow, BNP will bring out “black-flag” processions in Dhaka on Saturday (February 24) demanding release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now in jail after being convicted in a graft case.

BNP Senior Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan office in the capital on Wednesday.

“We want to hold black-flag processions as the authorities concerned did not give us the permission for holding the rally,” Rizvi said.

Earlier, the party sought permission from the DMP to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on February 22 demanding release of the BNP chief.

On February 8, a special court in Dhaka convicted the former prime minister and sentenced her five years’ imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

As part of the protest programme, the BNP earlier staged countrywide demonstration, observed hunger strike.
