Atiqul gets AL ticket for DNCC by-polls, Zakia in Kishoreganj

Senior Correspondent: Awami League nominated businessperson Atiqul Islam to vie the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-polls.

Besides, the ruling party also picked former AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam’s sister Syed Zakia Nur Lipi to contest for the Kishoreganj-1 by-polls. 

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader came up with the disclosure while addressing reporters in a press conference at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban on Saturday night.

Earlier, the decisions were taken at a joint meeting of Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) and AL Local Government Nomination Board meeting around 6:30pm.

On the other hand, Matiar Rahaman, the incumbent mayor of Amtali Pourasabha in Barguna, Kazi Alamin, acting general secretary of Patuakhali district, and Ashraful Alam, AL organising secretary of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenidah, have been picked as mayoral candidates for the respective pourasabhas.

AL Local Government Nomination Board also picked mayoral candidates for three pourasabhas and chairmen candidates for 29 union parishads across the country, said Obaidul Quader.

The by-elections to the DNCC mayoral post and Kishoreganj-1 constituency will be held on 28 February.
