RMG workers’ minimum salary Tk 12,500 fixed

The government-appointed Wage Board has fixed Tk 12,500 as minimum monthly pay for the readymade garment (RMG) workers.
The Wage Board committee took the decision at its sixth meeting on Tuesday.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian came up with the announcement at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
As per the Prime Minister’s directive, the basic wage for the RMG makers has been increased by 56.25% to Tk 12,500 from Tk 8,000. They will get 5% increment every year, the state minister said.
The minimum wage for the RMG workers has been fixed based on the recommendations from both owners and workers representatives, she said.
Sirajul Islam Roni, president of Jatiya Garments Sramik-Karmachari League, represented the workers. Siddiqur Rahman, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and chairman of Sterling Group, represented the factory owners.
After the meeting, Siddiqur Rahman said the new salary structure will be effective from January next year.
