Number of millionaires increases in the country

Bangladesh has seen an increase in the number of millionaires this year, according to Bangladesh Bank’s updated data.

The central bank data showed that the number of millionaire bank account holders stood at 2,49,689.

In the banking sector alone, the number of millionaires has increased more than 4.5 times in the last 14 and a half years. However, many have become millionaires in the country outside the banking sector.

At the beginning of 2009, the number of millionaires in the banking sector was 44,369 people. In the last 14 and a half years, millionaires in the banking sector have increased more than four and a half times. Out of the statistics, there are countless millionaires and exact figure of their money remained unknown.

According to Bangladesh Bank, at the end of last June, the number of depositors (more than one crore taka) in the bank sector stood at 1,13,554 people. In December 2008, the number of millionaire depositors in the bank sector was 19,163. On the other hand, at the end of last June, the number of borrowers stood at 1,36,135 people.

Economic analysts opined that the informal economy in Bangladesh is quite large. No one knowns the exact data of this economy. As a result, there are many millionaires hidden in the informal economy.
