Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey has taken a world record-equalling eight catches in an innings for South Australia on Wednesday.
It was the 32-year-old Test wicketkeeper's first 50-over game since being dropped from the Australian side at last year's World Cup in India and he had a day to remember.
His achievement came on the same day exciting Victorian opening batsman Tom Rogers scored 196 against NSW to break the one-day record for his state, passing Aaron Finch’s 188 made in 2019.
Five of Carey’s catches were taken off the bowling of Jordan Buckingham, who finished with 6-41 in the Bulls’ total of 218 at Karen Rolton Oval. Rogers dominated Victoria’s score of 311 in 48.4 overs, hitting 15 fours and 15 sixes on the small North Sydney Oval before he was caught on the boundary chasing a double century.
He took 26 from five consecutive balls delivered by former Test fast bowler Jackson Bird, including three sixes.
“It was a lot of fun out there,” Rogers said. “They were pretty small boundaries and it was nice to cash in.”
However, NSW beat Victoria thanks to a Dan Hughes century (119), making 3-256 to win by seven wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis method. NSW will host the Marsh Cup final this month against Western Australia, who overcame Tasmania, while South Australia beat Queensland.
