India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has become only the second Indian and ninth overall to take 500 wickets in Test cricket.
Ashwin accomplished the landmark during the third Test against England in Rajkot on Friday, making him only the second Indian after the legendary Anil Kumble to take 500 Test wickets.
Ashwin, an off-spinner who began the Test on 499 wickets, dismissed opener Zak Crawley for 15 in Rajkot.
Ashwin bowled a full-length delivery at leg-stump and Crawley top-edged to Rajat Patidar at fine leg.
Ashwin joins fellow spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka - 800), the late Shane Warne (Australia - 708), Kumble and Nathan Lyon (Australia - 517) in the exclusive club.
Ashwin's teammates gathered around him to offer their congratulations, marking him as only the second Indian to reach this illustrious milestone. It's undoubtedly a moment for celebration, but there's also the recognition that there's still work to be done in the larger context of the game.
