Sports Desk: An Egyptian lawyer has threatened to sue Sergio Ramos over his challenge on Mohamed Salah in Saturday’s Champions League final which has put the Liverpool forward’s World Cup participation in doubt.
During the first half of Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool, Ramos hauled Salah to the ground leaving the Egyptian clutching his shoulder. Salah tried to continue but left the pitch in tears soon afterwards.
The Egypt FA announced that Salah had suffered a sprain of the shoulder ligaments, but there is not yet a timescale on his recovery and the PFA player of the year could now miss the World Cup, which begins on 14 June.
Lawyer Bassem Wahba accused Ramos of deliberately injuring Salah and inflicting “physical and psychological harm” upon Egypt and the nation’s favourite player and said he was seeking damages of more than €1bn (£873m).
“Ramos intentionally injured Mo Salah and should be punished about his actions,” he claimed. “I’ve filed a lawsuit and a complaint to Fifa.
“I’ll ask for compensation, which could exceed €1bn, for the physical and psychological harm that Ramos gave Salah and the Egyptian people.”
Wahba pledged to donate any money earned to the country’s Long Live Egypt Fund.
An online petition calling for Ramos to be punished by football’s authorities has amassed nearly half a million signatures.
